According to telephone information provided by the District Office Bratislava, Department of Citizenship, foreign athletes interested in representing the Slovak Republic are required to hold a Slovak passport or Slovak citizenship. The granting of citizenship for such reasons is considered an exceptional circumstance. The application and its justification are assessed by the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic. Condition for Granting Residence
Pursuant to Section 7(2)(b) of Act No. 40/1993 Coll. (hereinafter referred to as the “Citizenship Act”):
“An applicant who has been granted residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic may be granted Slovak citizenship without fulfilling the conditions set out in Section 7(1)(a), unless otherwise provided by this Act, if the applicant contributes to the Slovak Republic in the economic, scientific, technical, cultural, social, or sports field, or if it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic for another reason.”
The fundamental condition is that the athlete must be granted residence. There is no requirement for a specific length of residence. A foreign national has the option to apply, for example, for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of a special activity for athletes.

An athlete is required to submit the following documents with the application for granting Slovak citizenship:

- University Diploma
- Documents proving the reason for granting Slovak citizenship: diplomas, certificates of achievements, recommendations from associations, opinions of clubs, etc.

According to the telephone statement of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic: “The applicant shall submit documents on the basis of which they request an exemption, which do not have a prescribed form, such as documents on achieved successes, diplomas, opinions of federations, statements from clubs… It is also recommended that the applicant be a member of a Slovak sports club.” (Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, Department of Citizenship)
All foreign documents must be apostilled and officially translated.
