Key Points for Obtaining Slovak Citizenship by Descent

According to § 7 par. 2 of the Act (effective from April 1, 2022):

“An applicant who has a residence permit in the territory of the Slovak Republic may be granted Slovak citizenship without fulfilling the condition specified in paragraph 1 letter a) (i.e., continuous permanent residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic for at least eight years immediately preceding the submission of the application for the granting of citizenship of the Slovak Republic), unless this Act provides otherwise, if he/she was not a citizen of the Slovak Republic and at least one of his/her parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents was a Czechoslovak citizen born in the territory of the Slovak Republic.”

Key Requirements:

  1. The applicant must have a registered residence in Slovakia. The applicant can apply for a permanent residence permit valid for 5 years for a special reason as a descendant of a Czechoslovak citizen.
  2. The applicant must never have been a Slovak citizen.
  3. The applicant must be a direct descendant (child, grandchild, or great-grandchild) of a Slovak citizen.
  4. The applicant’s ancestor must have been born in the territory of the Slovak Republic and held Czechoslovak citizenship.

Proof of knowledge of the Slovak language is not required for this process.

I engaged AKMV Laf Firm for assistance with renewal of my temporary residency. As expected, the process was not entirely straightforward, and the expert knowledge and experience of AKMV was crucial to both a successful application and providing reassurance to me with what could have been a stressful time. As such, I arrived at the Foreign Police with all the correct documentation and the application was made quickly and without difficulty. Follow-up requirements from the Foreign Police were quickly and precisely addressed by AKMV. The successful application was advised once approved. I have not hesitated to recommend AKMV to other foreigners and will seek their assistance for my immigration needs in the future.
