The Council of European Union laid down the Regulation No. 2157/2001 of 8 October 2001 on the Statute for a European Company. It brought into being the basis of a new business form called a European Society (Societas Europaea SE).

by the conversion of a national joint stock company into a European company and it must have had a subsidiary in another EU country for at least 2 years.
